GitHub will keep Arctic cave open source for 'future generations'

GitHub CEO Nat Friedman confirmed his intention to create a data storage protected from any external threats in one of the caves of the Arctic archipelago of Spitsbergen. On February 2, 2020, GitHub will automatically create a copy of all its active public repositories. This archive will then be moved to the GitHub Arctic Code Vault . The information with the code will be recorded on a film coated with silver halides on polyester. According to ISO standards, this material has a guaranteed service life of 500 to 750 years. Alternative tests show that this film will not lose its properties for at least 1000 years. The GitHub Arctic Code Vault is modeled after the Global Seed Vault, also located in Svalbard. The goal of the project is the desire to preserve open source software for future generations of humanity in the event of a nuclear disaster or other global cataclysm. Source: Bloomberg
