Mentor for a “healthy person” and how long it takes to learn to code: the developer answers questions. Video

We continue our series of interviews with developers, in which we talk about training, job search, career growth and relocation. In the fourth interview, developer Roman Beskrovny answers questions from subscribers: is it possible to find a free mentor and how to do it, how long does it take to take the JavaRush course, and whether a low level of English can prevent you from finding a job.
What should a healthy person's mentor look like? I work in a company and have very little help from a mentor. And help on architecture and solutions rather than on implementation. Although, as a beginner, the first is more important to me at the initial stage. I don’t understand, is this how it should be or is there something wrong? Here you need to understand the situation. Programmers are not teachers. Only a few have the understanding of how to teach correctly. Many people have ideas, personal experience and that’s all. If a mentor has an interest in cooperation, this, of course, motivates him. If he was asked to help, but he didn’t really want to, then his attitude is accordingly. Therefore, it is important to understand whether your mentor has an interest in continuing to help. If it is not there, then try to find this interest. For example, I believe that a mentor should simply guide a person in which direction to develop, and not do everything instead of the mentee. Practice is already yours. Especially if you are already at work. No one should do your work for you. But you can ask how best to do it if you offer him options for implementing the task. If you study every day for 3-4 hours, how long will it take to complete the JavaRash course? If you study for 3-4 hours every weekday and rest on weekends, then you will spend from 5 to 10 months completing the course. But it is important to understand: where does learning begin in your case? There are people who already had an understanding of what a variable and logical operations are, then it will be faster and easier for them to receive information. Or, for example, a person already has experience developing in other languages. Other people will need a little more time to master the course, but I think that 5 to 10 months is enough. I think there is no need to rush. You can learn more about the world of IT and development by watching the video with Roman.
