How to get into IT in a year and a half, but still not become a Java developer

Published in the Random EN group
Hello community! The story turned out to be somewhat chaotic, but worthwhile, and multi-text, so be patient and enjoy reading 😘 A short introduction about me: - There is a tower in IT specialty; - After graduating from HSE, I hated programming and wanted to work in a stupid job for the rest of my life (yes, I was burned out even then :D); - I fell for the catchy advertisement that they get 300k/sec in IT; - At first I tried the hype python, but my friend recommended java)))); How to get into IT in a year and a half, but still not become a Java developer - 1 I don’t want to write tedious stuff like I loved programming and cappuccinos since childhood, and blah blah blah... We will consider the starting point of this story to be April 2020, when I paid for my annual subscription to this resource, with a decent discount. At that moment I talked to a friend who encouraged me to learn Java, although he himself bought a subscription to a well-known company (Gypsy) and abandoned it, but oh well... By the way, I worked as an Internet and TV installer, I had a lot of free time. How to get into IT in a year and a half, but still not become a Java developer - 2 Within a year of training I reached level 37. I studied intermittently, at my own pace, at times I gave up due to the “invisibility of the result”... It seemed to me that this was not enough, then there were 41 levels in total, but I didn’t want to buy any more subscriptions and decided to delve deeper into frameworks and look for work in parallel. Then everyone around me insisted that when applying for a job you had to lie about your experience and show your educational projects, but most of the time it didn’t even get to social security. Now I understand that I had a very poor resume, of which there are simply hundreds of thousands. And it doesn’t matter what level of your knowledge is, there is simply an hr screening that filters out people with “similarly bad” resumes. But I got distracted, sorry. How to get into IT in a year and a half, but still not become a Java developer - 3 My first job interview happened after about 3 months of searching. An arrogant guy called with an offer to work as a Java developer, to discuss the salary after social security, and of course I agreed. I sweatily prepared for a couple of days, but it didn’t help much, of course I failed. They promised feedback and rode off into the sunset... I was wildly upset, because in all the stories people easily find a job in almost half a year of studying, but I’ve been studying for more than a year in raids, with 0 results! Of course, I abandoned all this IT for about a month and procrastinated, while simultaneously looking for internships. How to get into IT in a year and a half, but still not become a Java developer - 4 And then I accidentally stumbled upon an internship, a vacancy for a “load testing engineer.” The conditions were very interesting, and in a month it was necessary to get involved in the “load” and master a bunch of theory. A nice girl conducted the screening, asked a few “standard java interview questions” and I was accepted. And so, inspired, I begin to take the course with a mentor. True, everything turned out to be not at all as rosy as the girl described at the beginning... The mentor could respond for 3 days, while he was wildly toxic. And it also turned out that I would have to work for them only for some 2 years MANDATORY, otherwise I would have to return a tidy sum for this, let’s say, not very high quality, How to get into IT in a year and a half, but still not become a Java developer - 5 However, a new world opened up for me - testing. It seemed to me that I’m not fit to be a developer at all, they don’t call me for social security (the problem is in my resume), the requirements are high, the competition is fierce. But testing is completely different. The entry threshold is lower. A tester with knowledge of a programming language is in demand. And there are vacancies too. And I started applying for vacancies as an auto tester, mostly without experience. But at the same time I continued to study Spring and everything about Java development. Time was ticking towards autumn 2021... After some time of searching, I was offered an interview for an auto tester in Java. The social security job went well, but I was not accepted due to lack of experience. Motivation dropped a little again. I decide to go on YouTube and come across a video about Dart! By the way, this was another video about a hype technology, saying that the demand is huge and we urgently need to study it and earn 300k/sec. While I'm researching on the Dart/Flutter topic, suddenly I'm invited to an internship as an autotester in Java. At the same time, the internship lasts about a month, and then employment, and even for a salary. And then I understand - here is the chance. According to the plan until the new year, 2022, I would have just entered this cherished IT... I’m quitting Flutter, preparing for interviews using Zhenya Suleymanov’s video))) The How to get into IT in a year and a half, but still not become a Java developer - 6 interview went very well, and I got an internship. It is worth saying that the company was an ordinary gallery that raised interns and outsourced them, which was ideal for me. The training was supposed to take about a month in the evenings, with homework and online/recorded lectures. I successfully completed the training, passed the final interview with the future manager, and quit my boring job as an installer, but in January 2022 :) How glad I was when I passed the final interview . How often have I read that exactly “your” company will be found, exactly at “that” time and in “that” place. How often have I studied and given up . I succumbed to hype technologies and thought that I needed to learn something else , that java was not my thing. How often have I been on the verge of throwing everything away and living an ordinary boring life without this suffering of “learning for the table” . I truly suffered to get my job and it paid off. How to get into IT in a year and a half, but still not become a Java developer - 7 After 3 months, I successfully passed the probationary period, and after half a year I quit. Here you can throw tomatoes at me, but it turns out that with minimal experience you can make a significant boost in salary (in my case x3), and the project was very boring. Now I continue to work in qa automation in Java, but in a product company. Testing in a nutshell: - autotester - the same developer, but using different frameworks; - the salary of an autotester is not much less than that of a developer; - really lower requirements and just as many vacancies; - there is always the opportunity to get into development, but I’ve heard stories of colleagues who went into development and returned because testing was cooler (I can’t confirm, but there are several cases); - developers treat testers as second-class citizens, but this is more of a stereotype, and I don’t give a damn about it)) Conclusions: Please don’t give up! Keep learning, especially if you've already gone through a lot. You will definitely find your company. They will definitely hire you; the IT market will be free for a long time. Yes, times are hard now, but when were they simple? Yesterday there were less stringent requirements, but so what? Tomorrow the requirements will be even stricter, don’t despair! Even someone as stupid and lazy as I could do it, so can you! I am extremely grateful to this resource and the community for their support and development in the profession. Further more! Thank you for reading, great luck to everyone!!! And be sure to write your success story! This is simply unrealistic motivation during training - the living, real life of a simple person who could😎
