How can a developer easily integrate into a new project? Video

Published in the Random EN group
We continue our series of video interviews with developers, in which we talk about training, job search, career growth and relocation. In the fifth interview, we talk with Epam Systems developer Roman Beskrovny about how a programmer can easily and painlessly enter a new project. Roman gives some simple tips that can make your first days at a new job easier.

Go through onboarding

For projects that have existed for a long time, there is a document called onboarding - step-by-step instructions for getting started at work. This could be obtaining accounts on the project (work email, client email), gaining access to services and working tools. That is, everything you need to go through before you start coding. There are situations when there is no onboarding plan, so it is a good practice to create this document yourself. It will take a little time, but it will be appreciated by the project team.

Participate in rallies

Nobody likes rallies. But at the very beginning of work, in order to understand what is happening on the project, what tasks are being solved, who is doing what, you simply need to go to them. Naturally, nothing will be unclear. Due to the fact that each project has its own specifics, they may also use specific terminology. Write it down and remember it. Then you can approach one of your colleagues and clarify the meaning of working vocabulary.

Chat with colleagues

Ask a senior developer, for example, to tell you about the project. At the beginning he will say that everything is the same as everywhere else, but after a couple of minutes of conversation it will become clear that there are a lot of nuances that no one writes down. Usually, when entering a project, a lot of time is spent precisely on completing the assigned tasks, taking into account the nuances of the project. Watch the video to learn more tips from Roman on how to enter a new project.
