We are launching a new section “Problem Question”, in which we will periodically answer questions about Java University . CodeGym experts will try to debunk fears and doubts about the course, as well as provide valuable advice. In the first text, we answer your questions regarding the level of knowledge of the student. If a person is a complete zero in programming, is it worth going to Java University?

Problematic question: “If I am a complete zero in programming, is it worth going to Java University”? - 2Just the same, it’s worth going to Java University, because there a student will be able to ask a question that is unlikely to be answered on the Internet. The mentor will tell you what to focus your attention on, how to study, and share your experience. This will make it much easier and more efficient. At the beginning of learning something new, it is important that there is contact with another person who can explain what is not clear. Later, when a programmer's expertise grows, it is much easier for him to master new technologies on his own.

Is it possible to enter IT in 1-2 months?

Problematic question: “If I am a complete zero in programming, is it worth going to Java University”? - 3This is one of the popular myths about the IT industry. But, alas, as in any profession where specific skills are needed, such a quick entry is impossible. Remember that earlier, in order to get a profession, you had to study 4-5 years at the university. Nevertheless, if we talk about the profession of a Java developer, then in a year you can master the necessary base and get your first job. It's pretty fast. Java University's one-year program covers the basics of programming, including Java Core, and specific technologies, such as databases, Spring, and Hibernate, that you will need on the job. We have designed a program with an optimal load so that you can study, but have time to devote time to other activities in your life. Even so, you will have to spend at least 10 hours a week on training, depending on the level of the student, and this is a lot.

What level of technical equipment is needed for training?

Alexey Kapustnik, CodeGym mentor answers:

During their studies, students use the minimum set of technologies - a regular laptop and at least 4 GB of memory will be enough for them. When students work on serious and heavier projects, of course, this memory may not be enough. My laptop currently has 16 GB of RAM, and sometimes I don't have enough of it. But while you're learning, 4 GB is plenty.

Is the level of students the same in Java University groups?

Alexey Kapustnik, CodeGym mentor answers:

The level is different, although we start teaching from the very basics of programming. There are those who have never programmed, there are those who know other programming languages. It is normal that students come with different levels of knowledge. You don't need to get upset. In this case, the main thing is not to look at others, because everyone has their own pace and knowledge base. You need to take care of yourself and compare your current achievements with yourself in the past, and not with other people. You just need to spend more time studying the material, asking more questions, consulting with a mentor. By the way, competition with stronger students can spur some people on the contrary. Different levels of students in groups are even used as one of the teaching methods.

What level of English is required to study at Java University?

Alexey Kapustnik, CodeGym mentor answers:

Beginner level (A1) is enough to get started so that the student can understand the keywords and be able to name variables. If you know how “Hello, World!” is translated, then this is enough for the first time. But still, do not relax, you will have to learn English anyway, especially if you want to work for a foreign company.

Does it make sense to learn programming if you are over 40?

Problematic question: “If I am a complete zero in programming, is it worth going to Java University”? - 4Even if you are over 50, it makes sense to learn programming. If a person is afraid that ageism is present in his country and it will be difficult to find a job, then thanks to the pandemic, the geography of the labor market has expanded. Borders are blurred and people are hired from different countries to different companies. Especially if we are talking about programmers. You will be appreciated as a developer if you respond to changes, because skills become obsolete quickly, specialists are forced to constantly learn in order to be on the wave. It is often easier for young people to adapt to a rapidly changing environment, but this does not mean that developers 45+ will not be able to do this. You may need to put in more effort. For an employer, it is important whether a person is ready to learn, how many projects he has written, whether he was engaged in freelancing. You won’t be able to get into a serious project right away, but with due diligence and desire it is possible. Leave your questions about Java University in the comments, and we will try to answer them in the following texts.
