The right university

Published in the Random EN group
Right University - 1We live in the 21st century, called the "information age". Already 18 years have passed since the 20th century was left behind. Let's think about what a proper modern university should be like.

First, the university must produce professionals

  1. Concentration on the professional development of students. The main goal of the university should be "we accept yesterday's schoolchildren, and graduate highly qualified world-class professionals."

  2. Lack of general education courses. Of course, it is necessary to teach history, culture, life safety, philosophy, but not instead of professional special courses. And, for example, at home, and at will.
  3. real professions. The university should monitor the dynamics of professions in local and global markets and teach students only the most promising professions.

A student cannot get a job - return his money for training. And compensation for the five years wasted. Is the student himself to blame for not knowing and not being able to do anything? And why then issued a diploma? Gruzdev called himself get in the body.

  4. Narrow specialization. The qualification of a student who has graduated from a university and received a profession should not be lower than the market average. A university should give more experience and knowledge than a job: why spend five years at a university and pay money for it, when you can get the same knowledge and experience at work, and the money will pay you?

Specialists already working in this profession have more experience, which means that the student must be ahead of them, owning the latest cutting-edge achievements in the industry.

  5. Professional teachers. Only established professionals from the labor market should teach students.

Second, focus on the global labor market

  1. English language. English has become the de facto international language. A student may want to do an internship in France, then work in Germany and move to live in Japan. The graduate must speak English as a native. Therefore, all teaching at the university is best conducted in English.

  2. Excellent knowledge of information technology. The modern professional needs two things: a laptop and a brain. And he must masterfully handle both the first and the second.

  3. Support. The university must inform the student about all the opportunities to study abroad, internships in a Western company and / or about the possibility of getting a good job in another country.

  4. Manager. The university should act as a movie star's agent or athlete's manager. The university should look for good vacancies for the student, ways of self-development and an opportunity to make a career.

  5. Development plan. Each student should have a professional development plan for five and ten years, so as not to miss the opportunities that come up.

Third. The learning process must use the most effective innovations of the 21st century

  1. Online learning. It is not necessary to come to Moscow to study in Moscow.

  2. Lectures are outdated. It is enough to make a good video on the desired topic once and show it to students. Yes, at least a million students. Teachers are needed only to answer the questions that have arisen.

  3. Abstracts are outdated. How can you follow the thought of the teacher or argue with him if you are busy taking notes. And most importantly - why? The student should discuss with the teacher on the topic of the subject, and not take notes on it.

  4. Practical skills are decisive. All tests should be replaced by practical tasks. If you cannot solve a real practical problem, then what kind of a professional are you?

Fourth. Learning should be interesting

  1. Motivation. The teacher must motivate students. If the student wants to learn, the teacher is powerless here. Why should students listen to a teacher if he or she is incomprehensible and/or boring? It just becomes boring when it is not clear.

There are no bad students, there are bad teachers.

Let teachers come up with interesting tasks, examples, cases from life. When the audience is bored in the cinema, the director is to blame, not the audience.

  2. Learning in the form of a game. Learning in the form of a game is very effective, because. maintains interest in the subject and helps to gain the necessary amount of practical experience to become a professional. In WoW & Lineage, students spend more time than at the university.

All this, by the way, absolutely does not contradict the definition of Higher Education, which in fact is Higher Professional Education. It is on similar principles that training is implemented in the world's best universities: a lot of practice and a narrow specialization.

Higher education is outdated

  1. It prepares students according to the standards of the planned economy, which have been outdated for almost thirty years.
  2. It is not interested in the professional realization of its students.
  3. It does not help to engage in even your favorite “scientific activity”
  4. It does not contribute to the employment of students.
  5. Does not adjust its training program depending on the demand in the labor market.
  6. Doesn't motivate students.
  7. Poor teaching English.
  8. All and sundry are engaged in teaching, but not the best of the best professionals.
  9. There is no possibility to study online.

Is the bar too high?

Am I setting the bar high? Maybe I'm fantasizing here, and there are no such universities anywhere else in the world? After digging around on the Internet, I did find a few. According to The World University Rankings, there are only five Ukrainian universities that are in the “top 1000”, starting from the 800th position. Lomonosov Moscow State University entered the top 200, and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology entered the top 300. Among the two hundred best universities in the world is there only one university from the post-Soviet space?! And now let's try to answer the question: "How is it that our school education is one of the best in the world, and our university graduates are among the worst?" And here is the answer: our higher education is good, but useless and outdated. The science. Science, science, science. Science, science! Proper University - 2Yes, this science has surrendered to you! Science in the 21st century should be done by well-funded research institutes, not universities. A university is an institution of higher education. Educational! So let him teach! At school, here, no scientific research is being conducted, so what? There is an excellent education.
