Professional problems of programmers

Published in the Random EN group
Eye health is one factor that can ruin your career, dreams and aspirations. Unfortunately, this happened to me a few months ago. I came across Javarush.ru in mid-August 2017, I had a lot of time, my relatives were on vacation, there was no permanent job and I absorbed knowledge without interruption for 15-16 hours a day, ordering food at home or buying semi-finished products. Neglecting the banal factors of resting the eyes, and generally when working at the computer, I managed to successfully catch such a syndrome as “spasm of accommodation” in early September (only 17 days later!)

Accommodation spasm, or false myopia, is a spasm of the ciliary muscle that occurs when the eyes focus on close (or distant) objects for a long time. The pathology leads to the fact that the eye, due to fatigue, loses its ability to respond to changes in focal length, and as a result, visual acuity at a distance (or near) worsens. Taken from Wikipedia. At first, without going to the doctors, I decided to blame everything on eye fatigue and bought drops called “Vizin” and drank them for a week. The condition of the eyes remained poor. My vision is 100% as it was, so this disease is more related to neurology. Having decided to go to the doctor, I finally learned about my problem and how to treat it. I hasten to dispel the myth about the drops, they do not relieve eye fatigue, only physiotherapy and rest. At first I had some psychological problems due to the inability to move in the direction I chose. If you can’t crawl towards your goal, then look towards it - this saying really helped me. For about a month I couldn’t write code at all, sit close to the computer, or read anything even in a book, so I devoted this time to learning Java from various videos, mostly listening and sometimes looking at the screen (I was level 18) . I won’t say that at the time of writing I was completely cured and everything was restored as before, but in any case I did not give up, and I still continue to study, set goals and motivate myself to move forward. Read my conclusions on this topic.

CONCLUSION No. 1 CHARGING

What is rest for the eyes? This is a type of relaxation in which the focal length of your eyes changes. Several exercises for the eyes, as well as for the interconnected upper spine, that I have developed and use daily. This complex is not a full exercise, and is performed within 10-15 minutes of your work break:
  1. Close your eyes tightly for 3-4 seconds. Then release. Repeat 10 times.

  2. Go to the window. Look into the distance, focus on some tree or object, try to consider all its details within 5-10 seconds. Then look at the window (I usually put my finger out and focused on it, looking at the details). Repeat 10 - 15 times.

  3. Circular rotation of the eyes, you can draw an infinity sign. We quickly perform 2 rotations in one direction, then focus our gaze into the distance, resting our eyes for 3-4 seconds. Repeat 5-10 times in each direction.

  4. Place your arms in front of you, thumb up. We alternately spread our arms to the sides, focusing behind the arm that goes to the side. Attention, the neck is fixed, we only follow the thumb with our eyes. Repeat 10 times in each direction.

  5. Clasp your hands behind your back. Bend your elbows and raise your hands clasped along your back. Repeat 10 times.

  6. Hands clasped behind your back. Without bending your elbows, pull your arms back away from you. Repeat 10 times. Repeat 10 times.

  7. Circular rotations of the head. Repeat 5-10 times in each direction.
!Important note!We repeat all exercises slowly, at such a pace that you feel how individual muscles stretch during this movement, otherwise the opposite effect is possible.

CONCLUSION No. 2 EYE DROPS

I also use eye drops, inexpensive “drops” that prevent dry eyes. When working, we acquire the ability to immerse ourselves in solving a problem. I will say for myself that I am capable of not eating, not sleeping, not thinking about anything other than coding, and especially not blinking, which contributes to the drying out of the mucous membrane of the eye. Most of the moisturizing drops are not addictive and do not cause any side effects; I recommend their use.

CONCLUSION #3 CORRECT LIGHTING

Rules for working at a computer No. 1 - never work in the dark! For me, even now, it’s a problem to read something at night with the lights off; it creates a problem with the contrasts of the transition from the bright light of the screen to the dark keyboard. If you still need to work, then here’s a “life hack” for you - turn on the flashlight on your phone behind the computer, your eyes will thank you for it. However, bright light shining directly into the eyes is also a very bad indicator; close the blinds or curtains if you have them. I'm especially annoyed by bright lights in big stores.

CONCLUSION No. 4 SELECTION OF A MONITOR

If you are now choosing a computer, then pay attention to the screen, as for me this is the most important characteristic. Choose computers with a matte screen if you are not going to work as a designer. This will significantly reduce glare from the screen and ease eye strain. I also have glasses for working on a computer, but I will say one thing that they are not as important as a good screen and lighting for your workplace. I hope this post was useful to you and it will give you the right thoughts about organizing your workplace and time. In the meantime, you are thinking about my words - do not stop in the direction you have chosen, because almost every problem that falls on your shoulders can be solved.
