The Faculty of Sociology of St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU) conducted a survey to find out who is the best IT employer in the official and cultural Russian capitals.
The respondents were about 2,500 users of the IT communities “My Circle”, “VKontakte”, “Telegram” and visitors to JUG.ru events. Among those surveyed, 77% work for the benefit of technology. Of these, 57% are developers, 14% are testers, and 6% consider themselves DevOps specialists. The remaining 23% are managers (7%), analysts (3%), architects (2%), designers (2%) and representatives of other professions (8%).
When asked about the best IT companies that first come to mind, the JetBrains team won in St. Petersburg (48%), followed by Yandex (35%), VKontakte (13%) and EPAM (12%). Only 6% voted for Wrike, Luxoft and Grid Dynamics. In Moscow, the situation is as follows: Yandex is popular by 67% and Mail.ru Group by 27%. Further positions in the ranking are occupied by Kaspersky Lab - 10%, Google - 9%, Avito - 7%) and Badoo - 5%. Also, during the survey, the fact was highlighted that leading companies are clearly breaking away from followers and literally monopolizing the market.
The next question focused on the desired employer. Based on the data obtained, it became clear that developers choose the company they consider the best. This applies to the leaders from the previous question. But the situation is changing at the bottom of the list, as Wargaming and Deutsche Bank have surpassed EPAM, Grid Dynamics, Wrike and Luxoft. In Moscow, SberTech, Parallels and Rambler outperformed Avito, Badoo and Google. We can conclude that programmers evaluate companies differently depending on the essence of the question posed. Their answer depends on whether they view the company as a link in the IT market or as a personal employer.
It also became known that in each city there are at least 10 companies that 50% of developers know about. These companies largely correspond to the leaders of the entire survey. During the study, the surveyed audience was asked to rate the employing company according to certain criteria with a score from 1 to 7. Below you can see the survey results for the 12 companies that scored the highest number of points.
By analyzing the statistics, you can find out that Grid Dynamics and Wrike have the most flexible work schedules, the highest salaries in Deutsche Bank and JetBrains, career opportunities are greater in Grid Dynamics and EPAM, and that the best office is in Yandex and Mail.ru Group. Regarding professional development, we determined that the most professionals work in Yandex and JetBrains; technical expertise is better, again, in Yandex, JetBrains and Kaspersky Lab. Acquiring new skills and changing your specialization is a little more possible in Grid Dynamics, Yandex, Wrike and JetBrains. Also, respondents assured that the most prestigious companies are Yandex, JetBrains and VKontakte. The most interesting projects were those of Yandex, JetBrains, Wargaming and Mail.ru Group. As a result of processing all the data received, 1st place was shared between Yandex and JetBrains . Each of the companies was named one of the best according to 8 criteria out of 12. 2nd place is shared by Mail.ru Group and Grid Dynamics - the best according to 4 criteria out of 12. 3rd place was won by EPAM and Wrike - leaders in 2 criteria out of 12. Summarizing, the winners in the nominations “Professional Development” and “Social Package” were Yandex and JetBrains .
